LEMTRADA is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Because of its risks, LEMTRADA is generally used in people who have tried 2 or more MS medicines that have not worked well enough. It is not known if LEMTRADA is safe and effective for use in children under 17 years of age.

LEMTRADA: Getting Lost in Treatment Options? none By the LEMTRADA Team • January 11, 2017

Treatment Choices

Let’s start with some good news: there are more and more treatment options for relapsing MS. The tricky part is figuring out which one is right for you. There are so many options—like oral therapies, injections, and infusions—and your healthcare provider may talk about several of these options with you, so together you can decide which one seems like the best fit.

You should take a look at how well these therapies have worked in their clinical trials. Plus, even though there aren’t any treatments that are approved to reverse the progression of relapsing MS, you’ll want to ask your healthcare provider if your treatment of interest is effective when it comes to two of the goals of relapsing MS therapy: reducing the number of relapses and slowing disability progression.

Sometimes it takes time to find the right treatment, because there are so many things to consider, like safety, effectiveness, your lifestyle, and how well you can tolerate certain medicines. But don’t be discouraged if the first therapy you choose isn’t right for you. You and your healthcare provider will make treatment decisions together, based on how well your current treatment is working and if you are achieving your treatment goals.

Here are some questions you may want to ask yourself and then talk about with your healthcare team:

  • How many relapses have you had in the last year?
  • What are your treatment goals?
  • Is your current treatment meeting those goals?
  • Do you think your disability is progressing?

There are so many more questions you can ask, but these might be good starting points for talking about your relapsing MS treatment. You might also want to take a look at the LEMTRADA Healthcare Provider Discussion Guide. The guide has a larger list of questions you can ask yourself and it also has some questions you may want to ask your HCP about LEMTRADA, to see if it’s right for you.

MS One to One Nurses are also available 24/7 to give you the information you need about relapsing MS and LEMTRADA, so feel free to call them anytime at 1-855-676-6326.

No matter what you choose to talk about and whom you choose to talk with, always remember to be an advocate for yourself and have open and honest conversations with your healthcare provider.
