Tackling My Relapsing MS Head-On By Donnie, Father, Husband, Project Leader, Former Athlete • December 7, 2016
I remember when it happened—when relapsing MS showed up uninvited, but I processed the news, and I approached my diagnosis the same way I approach everything in life. I decided to tackle my MS head-on with a positive approach and a never-quit philosophy. So what if I have this disease? MS can’t control my faith or my attitude. I control those things.
I started therapy within weeks of my diagnosis. I tried injectables, IV treatments—all sorts of other therapies—but stopped all of them for one reason or the other.
In 2011 my neurologist told me about LEMTRADA. It was still in clinical trials, so we decided to wait for approval and then consider it. My doctor and I talked about the clinical trial results, as well as the possible side effects. After we had that discussion, I was sold.
My previous RMS medications didn’t work well enough for me. I was getting worse. I understood the importance of getting on a medication that slows down disability progression, so I was willing to try something else. My wife and I discussed the decision to start LEMTRADA, and she was all in.
When the drug was approved in 2014, I was ready to go. I was the first person in my state to enroll in the MS One to One® program for LEMTRADA. Additionally, before my first round of infusions, my wife and I met with a nurse at my neurologist’s office to go over the infusion process. Of course, she had lots of information to cover. She explained all of the potential side effects, what to expect during the infusions, and the lab tests and skin exam I would need to take.
LEMTRADA has worked well for me, but every patient is different, so I would encourage anyone who is considering LEMTRADA to work with your healthcare provider. Personally, LEMTRADA was the right choice for me.
