LEMTRADA is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Because of its risks, LEMTRADA is generally used in people who have tried 2 or more MS medicines that have not worked well enough. It is not known if LEMTRADA is safe and effective for use in children under 17 years of age.

Why Do I Need the Second Round of LEMTRADA Treatment? none By the LEMTRADA Team • November 3, 2017

Why do you need round 2 of LEMTRADA?

When it comes to treating relapsing MS—or any illness—it’s important to follow the instructions your healthcare provider gives you. When you take your medications as prescribed, you increase your chances of the medication working. The same goes for LEMTRADA, an infusion treatment for relapsing MS.

LEMTRADA is given in two rounds of treatment over 2 years, and includes monthly monitoring until 4 years, or longer, after your last treatment. Even if you are doing well after your first round of LEMTRADA and you haven’t had any relapses, it’s essential to make sure you follow through with your second round of treatment one year later, because the efficacy and safety of LEMTRADA were studied over 2 years. That means the results of the study were only measured after patients completed two treatment courses, rather than just one—and there’s a reason for that.

During Treatment

Let’s dig into what’s going on in the body during treatment.

Although it’s not known exactly how LEMTRADA works, during treatment, LEMTRADA identifies overactive T-cells and B-cells in the body and starts to remove as many of them as possible. One year after your first round of LEMTRADA, you’ll go for your second round of treatment.

A Look Into the Immune System

During and after both rounds of treatment, many overactive cells are removed from the body and the immune system starts to generate new T-cells and B-cells. This happens with both rounds of treatment.

So the most important thing to remember is that regardless of how you may be feeling on the outside after your first round of treatment, there are still a lot of different things going on inside your body during and after treatment with LEMTRADA. And remember that the second round of treatment is just as important as the first.

If you have any questions about LEMTRADA dosing or LEMTRADA in the body, feel free to call MS One to One at 1-855-676-6326, where Nurses are available 24/7 to give you the knowledge and support you need.
