My RMS Philosophy: Stay Positive and Don't Look Back! By Donnie, Father, Husband, Project Leader, Former Athlete • August 16, 2017
When I was in high school, one of my football coaches left a quote in each player’s locker before the start of one of our games. The quote below is referred to as the “Salesman’s Prayer” and is credited to Dr. Heartsill Wilson, and it has always had an impact on my life:
“Today is a new day. God has given me this day to use it as I will. What I do today is very important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it... I want it to be a gain not a loss, good not evil, success not failure, so that I shall never forget the price that I paid for it.”
Wow! To this day, whenever I read these words, I am inspired.
Anybody that has relapsing MS knows that it can have an effect on a lot of things! But one thing it can’t affect is your attitude. Having a positive attitude is a choice—that is in your control.
When I was diagnosed with relapsing MS at 30 years old, I knew that I was in for the biggest challenge that I had ever faced. I decided early on that I was not going to let relapsing MS get in the way. I was going to stay positive when it came to my future, so I chose to never look back, and that’s made such a difference.
What works for me? I start every day by thanking God for the life that I have. It hasn’t been easy by any means; there have been challenges. Relapsing MS has affected my mobility and taken away some of the things that I used to do. But it hasn’t affected my attitude. I’ve chosen to stay positive, in the hopes of overcoming some of the obstacles relapsing MS puts in my path.
I would like to think that in some way, the quote I got from my football coach has helped me over the years. Every day we wake up with a choice of whether or not to give in to negativity, and even with my relapsing MS, I’m proud to say that I choose not to. Stay Positive!
Are there any quotes that inspire you?
