Why We Bike MS By the LEMTRADA Team • January 9, 2018
2 entire days. Thousands of riders. Bike MS: The Cape Cod Getaway. Why do we do it? Well, there are quite a few reasons.
For over a decade, Sanofi Genzyme and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) have been working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of people living with RMS and their families. Bike MS is one of the most anticipated events each year—and people come from all over to participate.
This year, we went to the event and had the opportunity to speak with a bunch of riders from different backgrounds to get their perspectives on the Bike MS event. Here’s what they had to say about why they Bike MS:
We bike to be supportive
“A bunch of friends got together and we created Liam’s Lucky Charms—my Bike MS team. Over the course of the last eight or so years, our team has grown to about 150 people.” –Liam, Bike MS Team Leader
“We see other groups with their own bike teams—but today we’re all on the same team. Our goals are the same: to raise money for research and support for patients with MS.” –Sanofi Genzyme Team
“I think my favorite memories are when our team overcame challenges. We all problem-solve together. And that’s what we see with all the teams here—everyone supports each other.” –Laurie, National MS Society
We bike to inspire
“We’re determined to move forward and to make a difference. That’s the biggest thing.” –Joe, MS Care Partner
“We’ve made a big commitment to the community and a commitment to research as well. Sanofi Genzyme has a mission statement: doing the right thing with focus and passion for patients. This event allows us to say it with actions as well as words.” –Sanofi Genzyme Team
We bike to keep traditions
“Our team does something kind of unique to this ride. We all meet at the last rest stop in Truro. We gather as a team, so at that point there are probably like 110 of us left. Some people only do the first day. We gather and take a team picture, I say a few words, and we ride in together.” –Liam, Bike MS Team Leader
“I do have some friends with MS. I’m riding for them. Some people on our team actually have MS. What started out as a guy’s weekend out —a break from the norm to just hang out and be active—33 years later has turned into a fun weekend every year for my team, my friends, and myself.” –Bike MS Participant
And we bike to change the future
“I am passionate about the MS medical research I do in the Sanofi Genzyme R&D department. It’s nice to see progress being made against the disease. For hundreds of years there was nothing anyone could do, and in the past 20, more than 15 therapies have been developed by pharmaceutical companies all over the world. It’s just spectacular. We’re really making headway on this disease. It’s great to be a part of it.” –Charlie, Sanofi Genzyme Research & Development
“The mission of the National MS Society is to end disease progression and find a cure. At the same time, we have to take care of the people who are dealing with MS every day. But our ultimate goal is to serve and find a cure.” –Victor, National MS Society
“When you think about everyone’s commitment here, it doesn’t matter if you ride a bike, fundraise, or volunteer. Everybody can make a difference for MS, so we thank everybody who is part of this ride, whether you’re riding, volunteering, or giving money.” –Erik, Sanofi Genzyme Team
We all ride with determination, but we are not the only ones with purpose and passion when it comes to fighting MS.
